Lesson 27

Gone In 30 Seconds

Lesson Narrative

In this optional culminating lesson, students collect, represent, and analyze quantitative bivariate data. Then they group the quantitative data to create two categories, and look for evidence of an association in the resulting categorical data. This lesson allows students the opportunity to carryout the entire process of data analysis beginning with data collections and ending with an analysis of graphical representations to determine whether there is an association between two variables in the data. Students attempt to describe their reaction times by using the various techniques from the unit to model (MP4) their data.

Teacher Notes for IM 6–8 Math Accelerated
This lesson is optional. Use this lesson anytime after completing optional Lessons 23 and 24. Alternatively, if Lessons 23 and 24 are not used, plan to spend additional time in the lesson instructing students on two-way frequency tables.

Learning Goals

Teacher Facing

  • Compare and contrast (orally) representations of bivariate data, including scatter plots, two-way tables, segmented bar graphs, and relative frequency tables.
  • Describe (orally and in writing) associations in bivariate data using different representations of the same data.

Student Facing

Let’s gather and analyze some timing data.

Required Materials

Required Preparation

Students will work in groups of 4. Each group will need one stopwatch.

Learning Targets

Student Facing

  • I can collect data and analyze it for associations using scatter plots, two-way tables, and segmented bar graphs.
