Lesson 11

Constructing the Coordinate Plane

Problem 1

  1. Graph these points in the coordinate plane: \((\text-2,3)\), \( (2,3)\), \( (\text-2, \text-3)\), \((2, \text-3)\).

A coordinate plane with the origin labeled "O." The x-axis has the numbers negative 7 through 7 indicated. The y-axis has the numbers negative 5 through 5 indicated.
  2. Connect all of the points. Describe the figure.

Problem 2

Diego was asked to plot these points: \((\text-50, 0)\), \((150, 100)\), \((200, \text-100)\), \((350, 50)\), \((\text-250, 0)\). What interval could he use for each axis? Explain your reasoning.

Problem 3

Write the coordinates of each point.

Problem 4

Find the value of each expression.

  1. \(16.2 + \text-8.4\)
  2. \(\frac25 - \frac35\)
  3. \(\text-9.2 + \text-7\)
  4. \(\text-4\frac38 - (\text-1\frac14)\)

Problem 5

Lin and Tyler are drawing circles. Tyler's circle has twice the diameter of Lin’s circle. Tyler thinks that his circle will have twice the area of Lin’s circle as well. Do you agree with Tyler?
