This lesson is optional. The purpose of this sequence of three lessons is to introduce spreadsheet functionality to students who are unfamiliar with it. It is assumed that students know nothing about spreadsheets. If students have already learned to use spreadsheets as computation tools previously, this sequence of lessons can be safely skipped.
In this lesson, students learn to use a spreadsheet to perform basic operations with numbers. They also begin to notice the power of spreadsheets in such calculations by using the dynamic nature of the autocalculating features. In future lessons, students will have the opportunity to access spreadsheets to aid in calculating values such as mean, median, and standard deviation.
