Lesson 22
Features of Parabolas
These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 7, Lesson 22 support success in that lesson.
Lesson Narrative
In this lesson, students find important points such as intercepts and vertex for quadratic functions using graphs and equations. In the associated Algebra 1 lesson, students examine the vertex form of a quadratic equation to determine the vertex more easily. Students are supported for that work by finding the values using other forms so that the benefit of the vertex form can be appreciated more fully.
Students look for and make use of structure (MP7) when they describe the information they know about a quadratic graph without labeled axes. Students may choose to use appropriate tools strategically (MP5) if they recognize that technology may help in graphing a given quadratic equation.
Learning Goals
Teacher Facing
- Recall important features of a parabola including $x$-intercepts, $y$-intercept, and vertex.
- Recall that the vertex of a parabola lies on the axis of symmetry.
Student Facing
- Let’s recall what we know about parabolas.
