The purpose of this lesson is to support students when they work with area and perimeter of rectangles. It prepares them to recognize linear and non-linear relationships presented in multiple ways in later lessons. When students complete the tables and write expressions for area and perimeter, they are expressing regularity in repeated reasoning (MP8).

For the activity Inspect Some Rectangles, use your judgment about whether or not to make graph paper or calculators available, depending on whether they will support or get in the way of students’ access to the task.
