Lesson 13
Representations of Exponential Functions
These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 5, Lesson 13 support success in that lesson.
Lesson Narrative
In order to prepare students to write an equation from two points on a graph, students are given the equation and then asked to determine growth factor and initial value from the table and graph. Students make connections between table, graph, and equation to strengthen the skills necessary to participate in the associated Algebra 1 lesson where less information is provided. To make these connections, they are noticing and making use of structure (MP7). In the practice activity, students trade roles explaining their thinking and listening, so they have opportunities to explain their reasoning and critique the reasoning of others (MP3).
Learning Goals
Teacher Facing
- Describe how features of a graph can be determined from an equation.
- Determine a growth factor from a table or graph.
Student Facing
- Let’s get information about a function from its graph.
