Lesson 16
Working with Quadratics
These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 7, Lesson 16 support success in that lesson.
Lesson Narrative
In this lesson, students identify coefficients of terms in a quadratic equation in preparation for using the quadratic formula to solve equations. In the next activity, students solve quadratic equations using any method they choose. In the associated Algebra 1 lesson, students learn about the quadratic formula as a method for solving quadratic equations. The work of this lesson supports students to recognize parts of the quadratic formula as well as noticing benefits and difficulties in using the methods they already know. Students look for and make use of structure (MP7) when they rewrite quadratic equations in standard form and identify each term.
Learning Goals
Teacher Facing
- Identify the values of $a, b,$ and $c$ from quadratic equations of the form $ax^2 + bx + c = 0$.
- Practice solving quadratic equations using factored forms and completing the square.
Student Facing
- Let’s explore terms in a quadratic equation.
