Lesson 16

Graphing from the Vertex Form

These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 6, Lesson 16 support success in that lesson.

Lesson Narrative

This lesson prepares students for a few things they will be asked to do in the associated Algebra 1 lesson: evaluating quadratic functions in vertex form for various inputs, extracting the coordinates of the vertex of a graph from vertex form of the associated quadratic function, and reasoning about whether the vertex corresponds to a maximum or a minimum value of the function.

Learning Goals

Teacher Facing

  • Evaluate quadratic functions given in vertex form and notice patterns in the outputs.
  • Identify the vertex of the graph of a quadratic function.
  • Use given tables of values to sketch graphs of quadratic functions.

Student Facing

  • Let’s use vertex form to reason about a graph.
