Lesson 11
Zeros of Functions and Intercepts of Graphs
These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 6, Lesson 11 support success in that lesson.
Lesson Narrative
The purpose of this lesson is to strengthen connections between zeros of a function (input[s] when the output is 0), the output when the input is 0, and the coordinates of the intercept(s) of a graph of the function. Taken as a whole, this lesson can be considered a warm-up for the warm-up in the associated Algebra 1 lesson, when students will identify the coordinates of the intercepts of a graph of a given function. In the activity Intercept Detective, if students are given an authentic opportunity to make sense of the task, this is a chance to make sense of problems and persevere in solving (MP1).
Learning Goals
Teacher Facing
- Given different inputs and outputs of a function, find the corresponding output or input.
- Recognize patterns in input and output values that correspond to intercepts on a graph.
Student Facing
- Let’s see what happens when a function’s input or output is 0.
