Lesson 10
Equations and Relationships
These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 2, Lesson 10 support success in that lesson.
Lesson Narrative
The mathematical purpose of this lesson is to help students connect linear equations in two variables with the context the equation represents and the graph. Students compare multiple graphs and identify their slopes and intercepts. They also identify equivalent linear equations, some written in standard form and others in slope-intercept form. Students also reason about the meaning of the slope and \(y\)-intercept on a graph of a linear equation in the situation it represents. Students think abstractly and quantitatively (MP2) by thinking about the slope and intercepts in context.
Learning Goals
Teacher Facing
- Determine parts of equations (slope, y-intercept, x-intercept) and match to a graph.
- Identify and generate equations that will have the same graph.
Student Facing
- Let’s match graphs and equations.
